The Nigerian Army (NA) has on Thursday launched a book on “Leadership Principles for Junior Commanders in the Military” written by Colonel Chukwu Ogukwe Obasi.
Delivering his remarks during the book launch which took place at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Asokoro,Abuja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya stated that it is only through principles and capacity development that the NA can attain the level of professionalism needed to effectively and efficiently carry out its constitutional roles.
The COAS who was represented by Brigadier General Adeniyi Oyelade noted that the effective use of the principles and its application is saddled on the officers who are charged with the responsibility of training subordinates.
He said, working under principles and ethics will cause the commanders do things differently and have an effective outcome.
The COAS directed that the leadership principles highlighted in the book will be adopted in the curriculum of Corps Headquarters and training institutions.
“In a bid to contribute to the COAS vision which is “to have a professional Nigerian Army ready to accomplish assigned mission within a joint environment in defence of Nigeria” the leadership training senior Officers,NCOs must be accomplished, in view of this the COAS is enjoined all Corps Headquarters, Training Headquarters to embrace the leadership principles as exposed or espoused in this book in their training curriculum for commanders from company to sections level”.
He commended the Author for bequeathing his contribution on leadership to those at the base of the Nigerian military hierarchy triangle and urged other personnel to give their best to the service.
Lt Gen Yahaya, however,called on the general public to corporate with security agencies in order to bring to an end the current multifaceted security challenges bedeviling the nation.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim commended the efforts of the NA in contending with the multifaceted security challenges in the county.
Senator Anyim averred that leadership failure is the major factor responsible for the in development of Nigeria.
He said, “I want to believe that the basis for our setback today is on the process of leadership recruitment. When leaders are recruited without proper training, certainly, they would not have any basis to apply certain principles that would make them do their work efficient and dependable”.
He added that the interface between the military and the civil society has become an inescapable narrative and “we must build the interface in such a way that we would know the dividing line” .
According to him, there’s a nexus between the administrators of the polity and the defenders of the polity and both must work consonant and understand their border lines in other to deliver services.”
Senator Anyim enjoined both the military and the civil populace to work together for the development of the country.
He said the the tittle of the book is apt for both leaders and called on the military leadership to make the copies available to its training institutions.
During his remarks, the Royal Father,Emir of Kaura Namoda in Zamfara State His Royal Highness,Maj Sanusi Mohammed (rtd) noted that widespread insecurity across the country caused by the leadership failure.
He said, the success of the country is premised on the good and decisive leadership that would chat the way forward for all stressing that leaders must rise up and face the challenges.
The traditional ruler, however, called on Nigerians to pray for their leaders while urging leaders to address challenges squarely.
He commended the Service Chiefs and the entire Armed Forces for their efforts to ensure peace and security of the nation
“I commend the efforts of the military to reduce insecurity in this nation,they are fully committed to see that we sleep with our two eyes closed .
“I’m happy this book Leadership principles for Junior military commanders is like one of the criteria to solve Nigeria’s problem because I believe Nigeria military are the best leaders in Nigeria,” he said
He lauded the commitment of the military noting that the bulk work of securing the nation should not be left on the shoulders of the military alone but the collaboration of all stakeholders.
In his vote of thanks, the Author of the book, Col Chukwu Ogukwe Obasi urged both military and civil leaders to make conscious efforts of developing good principles of leadership for national building.
He charged the leaders to embrace visionary style stressing that everything rise and fall on leadership.
He commended the former COAS, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, the current COAS, Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, Corps Commander Medicals for their contribution and support for making the project a reality.
