Insecurity: National Assembly to give full legislative backings to military operations

The Nigerian Senate has vowed to give all the legislative considerations that would support the Nigerian Army to enhance its operational proficiency in contending with insurgency, banditry and other criminal elements ravaging the country.

Senator Ali Ndume, Chairman Senate Committee on Army, disclosed this to newsmen after a close door meeting with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru and other Senior Officers held in Army Headquarters, Abuja.

Senator Ndume who led other Committee members on the visit,
noted that with the level of insecurity in the country ,the Nigerian Army needed the desired and robust support by all and sundry to succeed, the current National Assembly inclusive. He said the visit was part of the oversight function of the Senate Committee members.

He said it became imperative for the Red chamber to give its maximum legislative backing for the procurement of adequate military hardwares,training of personnel and other necessary support to boost the fighting spirit of NA troops towards containing with all the security threats currently bedeviling the nation

According to him, the current Service Chiefs came onboard at a time Nigeria was having humongous security challenges and Nigerians hold them in high esteem and expectations in dealing with the threats.

He said the Nigerian Army must be given its desired support to deal decisively with those threats threatening the existence of Nigeria.

Senator Ndume who is the former majority leader while calling on government to give its support to the Nigerian Army, noted that the National Assembly will assiduously fast track the legislative procedure in the 2021 supplementary budget that is laid on the National Assembly.

“We are calling on the government to give the Nigerian Army the necessary support and tools to execute its mandate.

“Fortunately, we understand that the supplementary budget is laid before the National Assembly to take care of some of the lapses that we saw in the 2021 budget.

“And knowing the new challenges that we are facing,new challenges in various regions we hope and pledging that the National Assembly will give all the necessary support to the Nigerian Army when it comes to the issues of supplementary budget.”

He added that the Service Chiefs had assured that they would do their bests to meet the expectations of Nigerians in tackling the prevailing security challenges.

He also commended the troops of Nigerian Army for the giants strides recorded in the ongoing operations against insecurity in the country.

In his remarks, the COAS while commending the Committee for the visit, solicited the support of the Senate to providing required equipment such as armoured fighting vehicles and various combat enablers to confront insurgency and other security threats across the country.
