The Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the election of Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo.
The court’s decision came ahead of tomorrow’s planned inauguration of the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate in the recent election.
The five-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Lyon and recognize the next candidate with the highest number of votes and required spread.
The judgment was, however, delivered by Justice Ejembi Ekwo.
The apex court order was upon the claim that the candidature of Lyon’s running mate, Degi-Eremienyo, was defective and could not be redeemed.
The court said he had infected the ticket.
The judgment sets a revival for the outgoing governor of the state, Seriake Dickson following the plummet of his political fortunes with the defeat of his chosen candidate in the election, Douyle Diri.
